Varsity Soccer Teams Present Gift to Peterborough Regional  Health Centre

Student athletes raise funds to purchase flat screen TV for PRHC’s paediatric treatment room

Young patients at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) will find their stay a little more comfortable thanks to the generosity of Trent’s men’s and women’s varsity soccer teams, who donated a new 32” flat screen TV to the paediatric treatment room.  

“Our relationship with the PRHC is something all the players and coaches feel strongly about. We are happy to be able to make the kids' stay a little more comfortable,” said Stuart Robertson, coach of the men’s Varsity soccer team at Trent. “We enjoy giving back to the community because we know that we are having a positive effect on the people we are helping and we are part of something that is bigger than us as individuals.”

The teams raised the money for this year’s donation during the annual Labour Day car wash at Trent. On September 14, the athletes and coaches made a special trip to the PRHC to present the TV, which will be located in the treatment room used for such procedures as starting IVs and giving infusions.

“We are thrilled to have this TV as it makes a very clinical room looked a bit less threatening and it provides our patients with some valuable, age-appropriate distraction during their procedure. It also makes it much easier for parents to help their children deal with the stress of hospitalization,” said Lois Scott, child life specialist at the PRHC. “The Trent varsity soccer players and coaching staff are an outstanding group of individuals demonstrating a high level of commitment to their sport and their community. We thank them for this commitment and want them to know that for sick children and their families they have made a very positive difference.”

Last year, the teams donated a new XBox video game system and games to the Maternal Child Services Department. This year, the varsity soccer teams also made an additional donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
