The Trent Excalibur women's soccer team opened their preseason schedule on the road over the weekend as they travel to Redeemer University College and Brock University.
Trent Women's Varsity soccer team knocked off Redeemer by a 2-1 score on goals by Shannon O'Brien in the 22nd minute and Jesse Lonchamps in the 70th minute.
Trent dominated the game with strong performances by the back four Natalie Selkirk, Jenn Powless, Kelsey White, and Emily Larkin combined with exceptional effort in the midfield by Elaine MacPherson, and Danielle Curti which were key to the victory. Rookie goalkeeper Sarah MacGregor played a strong game in net.
The Excalibur fell to the Brock Badgers 3-1 in their second contest of the weekend. With only five returning players in the starting lineup Trent fielded a mostly rookie team against a more experienced Brock squad.
Trent conceded an early goal and struggled to adjust to the pace of play in the first half conceding twice more in the opening half. Following half time adjustments Trent came out to play a strong second half with rookie Rachel Pearson scoring her first goal of the preseason midway through the second half to give a final score of 3-1.
Assistant Coach Kevin Read noted that "the game was a good indicator as to where the team stood, and areas that need work on before the first game".
Trent will begin the season on the road against Laurentian on Saturday September 3rd.
As part of their trip to Brock and the Niagara Region, the squad used their time to visit Niagara Falls to further their bonding as a team
