Funds raised will help build varsity program and create Athletic Financial Awards to support future Trent athletes

The sold-out tournament was a shotgun scramble format that included contests throughout the day coordinated by some of Trent’s student varsity athletes. Guests included leaders from the Peterborough Petes, members of the Trent Board of Governors, University senior administrators, MPP Jeff Leal, CHEX general manager Michael Harris, and tournament sponsors. NHL legend and special guest Bob Gainey, who was unable to attend the tournament in person, sent his greetings to the group via video.
As part of the prestigious tournament, guests were also treated to a barbecue lunch, as well as a decadent refreshment tent on the course, provided by Aramark. After a day on the links, golfers were treated to a reception and dinner at Peterborough Golf & Country Club. A silent auction, featuring many outstanding items, including golf packages at Wildfire and Keystone, as well as a Dell computer monitor, a one-year membership to the Trent Athletics Centre, autographed Bob Gainey memorabilia, and more, was also held.
All proceeds from the annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament go towards supporting the varsity program at Trent University and athletic financial awards. These awards are designed to assist student athletes with a record of outstanding academic and athletic performance and demonstrated financial need.
“Our 2012 President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament was a huge success. It was great to see so many community people and corporate sponsors come out to support Trent's varsity athletes,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent. “It means a lot to the students, coaches and the University to have financial support for student athletes. It is challenging for students to commit to practicing every night, travel every weekend, and to maintain academic success. The money raised will go to athletic scholarships for students to assist them during their time at Trent. Many thanks to all who participated and contributed to this important tournament.”
The 2012 Winning Foursome title went to the team from the Peterborough Petes, which included, head coach Mike Pelino, assistant general manager Aaron Garfat, Board of Executives president Jim Devlin and treasurer Pat Casey. Winners of Closest-to-the-Pin were Trent Rugby coach Nancy Marcotte (Ladies) and University vice president of administration Steven Pillar (Men). Longest Drive winners were Michele Li of Shepell FGI (Ladies) and Pat Casey (Men).
Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to the many generous sponsors who helped make this year’s event such a success.
