Excalibur Women’s Soccer Wins First Game of Season, 2-1

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Trent Excalibur women’s soccer team challenged the Royal Military College in home game action on Wednesday, September 23, with a well-earned victory for Trent, 2-1.

Trent had the leading edge on RMC throughout the first half, creating lots of pressure in the offensive zone with many scoring opportunities.  Teamwork, great positioning and great timing were Trent’s strong suit, proving that they were there to win.  Excalibur Brittany McIntosh was a credit to Trent’s offensive push, with many strong breakaways and beautiful headers in front of the net.  The defence maintained a solid front against RMC, notably Megan Blair and Shadia Husseini, who helped keep points off the scoreboard for RMC, going into half-time tied 0-0.

The second half saw Trent continuing to challenge RMC with a more determined offensive force.  Excalibur Danielle Curtis scored early in the second half, swiftly launching the ball straight-on into the net, bringing the score to 1-0 for Trent.  Sarah McDougall of Trent scored later in the half, with RMC’s Sam Beckett retaliating with a goal shortly after, bringing the final score to Trent 2, RMC 1.

Trent coach Joe Muldoon was very impressed with the team’s ability in the game: “I thought we moved the ball better and moved it more forward than in the past.  We had lots of scoring opportunities and the girls were very happy with the win.”

Trent goalkeeper, Erin Persi, played an outstanding game in net, blocking many powerful shots from RMC players.

Trent Excalibur next takes on Carleton University in home game action this Saturday, September 26 at 1p.m.

Trent Sweeps RMC, 2-0

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Trent Excalibur men’s soccer team duelled it out with the Royal Military College in home game action on Wednesday, September 23, with Trent taking the win, 2-0.

The two teams quickly launched into a fast-paced, aggressive style game in the first half.  Trent gained the dominant edge, with the ball in the offensive zone for the majority of play.  Both Trent Cromwell Damile and Bobby MacNab had fantastic breakaways, displaying great hustle and high intensity.  RMC goalkeeper Jhordan Dorrington took the pressure from Trent and added several saves to the mix.  Excalibur Thaddeus Bolton added the first point to the scoreboard, with a dynamic goal in the last two minutes of the first half, giving Trent the lead 1-0 going into the second half.

Trent players entered the second half of play with adrenaline pumping, ready to take the win.  Excalibur Nasar Noori had a brilliant breakaway early in the half, but was stopped by the RMC defence close to the net.  Trent Goalkeeper Josip Bosnjak saw more action this half but held up to the challenge and blocked all shots.  Bolton put away another one for the Excalibur in the last minutes of play, bringing Trent to victory over the RMC, 2-0.

As of tonight, Trent’s Bolton is now the leader in points for OUA men’s soccer.

Excalibur men’s soccer next battles it out with Carleton University on home turf this Saturday, September 26 at 3:15 p.m.

Ottawa Overtakes Trent, 3-0

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Trent Excalibur faced off against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA women’s soccer action, Sunday, September 20 at Trent University, with Ottawa taking the win, 3-0.

Ottawa University opened the first half with a goal from Katherine Scott within the first few minutes of play, with a shot lobed into the top corner.  The ball remained in Trent’s end for the duration of the first half, with Trent goalkeeper Emma Parken taking the heat from the Gee-Gees, but deterred them from adding more points to the scoreboard.  Excalibur Jocelyn Blazey hustled ahead on a well-played breakaway, which was abruptly halted with an offside call, closing the first half in Ottawa’s favour, 1-0.

Both teams emerged refreshed after half-time, playing with even more intensity and determination. Ottawa upped their offensive force, but Trent’s defence solidly fought back against the oncoming pressure until Gillian Baggott of Ottawa scored with a perfect header off a corner kick.  Dominique Falardido added another point for the Gee-Gees shortly after with a swift shot into the net, bringing the final score to Ottawa 3, Trent 0.

Trent Excalibur next faces off against RMC Wednesday, September 26 4 p.m. at Trent University.

Varsity Soccer Teams Donate XBox to Peterborough Regional Health Centre

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Student Athletes Raise Funds to Purchase Video Game System for PRHC’s Maternal Child Services Department

With a desire to make a difference in the community, student athletes on Trent’s Varsity soccer teams recently made a special donation to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) – a new XBox video game system and games for the Maternal Child Services Department.

“We wanted to give back to the Peterborough community and what better place to start than the hospital?” said Stuart Robinson, coach of the men’s Varsity soccer team at Trent, who came up with the idea to make the donation. “The hospital can be a scary place for kids. We felt that an XBox might help them take their minds off of what they are going through, even for just a little while.”

The Varsity teams held a special car wash earlier in the year to raise funds to purchase the system and games. On September 2, they made a special trip to the PRHC to present the gift to the Maternal Child Services Department, which includes paediatric service and providing medical and surgical care for children from birth to 18 years of age.

Lois Scott, child life specialist at the PRHC, met with the teams and provided a tour of the paediatric ward to the athletes.

"We truly appreciate the athletes and coaches coming in to visit. The players are an impressive group,” Ms. Scott said. “The staff, patients and their families thank the men's and women's Varsity soccer teams for this very generous gift. It can take more than medicine to make children and teens feel better; this game system will provide hours of enjoyment and entertainment, promoting a positive hospital experience and recovery."
