President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament Raises $30,000 to Support Varsity Athletes

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Funds Raised at Sixth Annual Event will Create Athletic Financial Awards to Support Future Trent Athletes
President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament Ra
On Thursday, June 17, 2010, the sixth annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament, sponsored by Bell, and held at Peterborough Golf & Country Club, raised an impressive $30,000 to support varsity athletes and athletic financial awards at Trent University.

In total, 64 golfers participated in this year’s tournament. The tournament was a shotgun scramble format that included contests throughout the day, which were coordinated by some of Trent’s student varsity athletes. Golfers were treated to some fabulous refreshments on the course, provided by Aramark. Following the tournament, guests enjoyed dinner in the Great Hall at Trent, donated entirely by Aramark. Greg Millen, hockey commentator and former NHL goalie, emceed the event.

All proceeds from the President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament go towards supporting the varsity program at Trent University and athletic financial awards. These awards are designed to assist student athletes with a record of outstanding academic and athletic performance and demonstrated financial need. Each donation is matched dollar-for-dollar by the government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program.

Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent, stated, “As we build our varsity program, we need to support student athletes in every way. As we push for both athletic and academic performance, often students have difficulty managing part-time jobs to pay for their education. Athletic scholarships and bursaries help to both attract great athletes to Trent, while assisting them in reducing their financial challenges. It is so invigorating to see the amount of support in the community for our varsity program and for our student athletes.”

The Top Team title went to the foursome of Doug Gibson, Kylie Gibson, Mark McArthur, and Paul Crowley (pictured above). Winners of Closest-to-the-Hole were Kylie Gibson (Ladies) and David Wills (Men). Longest Drive winners were Lori Neill (Ladies) and Steve Hoar (Men). Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to the many generous sponsors who helped make this year’s event such a success.
