Trent Volleyball Tuesday Night Recap

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - It was straight sets win for the Trent varsity women’s volleyball team, and a heartbreaking 3-2 loss for the varsity men’s teams, as both squads played a rare Tuesday evening contest against the George Brown Huskies.

The Excalibur women improved to 8-2 win their win and sit in second place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association East division as they head into the exam break.

Sarah MacLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) led the way for Trent as they downed the visiting Huskies by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-19.  MacLaren tallied 11 points on six kills, one ace and four blocks.  Excalibur veteran setter Hayley Hancock (Barrie, Ont.) had one kill, five aces and three blocks for nine points, while Sara Rettie chipped in eight kills in the win.

The Excalibur men fell to 1-9 on the season after the five-set loss to George Brown.  The visitors stormed out taking the first two sets 25-18 and 25-12.  Trent battled back as they were able to take the third and fourth sets 25-22 and 25-21.  The final set was a back and forth affair, but the Huskies pulled away late to take the set 15-11 and earn the win.

Trent’s Chris Jacklin (Dryden, Ont.) had 17 points in the loss.  Jacklin counted 12 kills, three aces and two blocks.  Brad Keizerwaard (Holland Landing, Ont.) also had a big night in the losing effort.  Keizerward had 11 kills with one ace and four blocks.  Jurgen Gorenca (Tirana, Albania) chipped in nine kills and two aces for the Excalibur.

Both teams are now off until the new year. The Excalibur will open up the second half of the season hosting cross-town rivals, the Fleming Knights.  The games will take place on January 11 with the women beginning at 6 pm and the men following at 8 pm.

Women's Volleyball Goes 1-1 Over the Weekend

The Trent Excalibur varsity women’s volleyball team earned a split in two home games over the weekend.  Trent downed the Boreal Vipres 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-15) on Saturday, before falling in straight sets to the first place Cambrian Golden Shield on Sunday (26-24, 26-24, 25-5).

The Excalibur now sit with a 7-2 record, which is good enough for sole possession of second place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) East Division.

In the match against Boreal, Trent was dominant in the 3-0 win. Sarah MacLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) and Emma Schlegl (Ardrossan, Alta.) paced the Excalibur with nine points each.  Schlegel counted six kills and three aces, while MacLaren had six kills, one ace and two blocks.  Peterborough-native Samantha Belsey added six points on four kills, one ace and one block in the win.

The Excalibur were not as fortunate when they came up against a strong Cambrian College squad.  Trent played closed, but dropped the first two sets by identical 26-24 scores, before losing focus and falling apart in a 25-5 third set loss.

MacLaren and Schlegl each had seven points in the loss, while Belsey and Rebecca Van Staalduinen (Peterborough, Ont.) had six points each.  Hayley Hancock counted 13 digs for Trent in the game.

Cambrian was paced by a 16-point performance by Shawna Metcalfe (ten kills, six aces) and 15 points from Kelsey Fielding (12 kills, one ace, two blocks).

The next action for the Excalibur will be a home contest on December 6.  The Excalibur will play host to the George Brown Huskies for a 6 pm start in the final game of the season’s first half.

Trent Men's Volleyball Wins First of the Season

The Trent Excalibur varsity men’s volleyball team earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 25-19) win over the Boreal Vipres on Saturday night.  The Excalibur, followed up the win with a close, but disappointing 3-1 (25-17, 23-25,  25-23, 25-23) loss to the Cambrian Golden Shield on Sunday.

The win was the first regular season victory for Trent rookie head coach Josh Neadow.  After the weekend, the Excalibur sit tied for 9th place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) East Division with a 1-8 record.

In the victory over Boreal, the Excalibur received great offensive performances from Chris Jacklin (Dryden, Ont.), Jurgen Gorenca (Tirana, Albania) and Brad Keizerwaard (Holland Landing, Ont.).  Jacklin had 15 points (13 kills, two aces), Gorenca added ten kills and four aces, while Keizerwaard chipped in eight kills and three blocks. Jacklin also added 13 digs in the win.

A 19-point performance by Jacklin in the final game of the weekend was not enough, as the Excalibur fell to Cambrian in a back and forth contest.  Jacklin’s 19 points came on a season-high 16 kills plus two aces and one block.  Gorenca added seven kills and five aces, while Kiezerwaard  had nine kills and two blocks in the loss.

Dakota Campbell led Cambrian with 16 points (13 kills, once ace and two blocks).  The Golden Shield also received nine kills from Chris Irving and eight kills from Chris Borrie.

The Excalibur will wrap up the first half of the season with a home contest against the George Brown Huskies. The game will take place on December 6 at 8 pm.

Varsity Track and Field Attend First Ever Meet

The Trent University Track & Field team took part in the first meet in school history over the weekend.  The Excalibur traveled to Toronto to take part in the York Xmas Open at York University. The team’s results showed promise for the upcoming season.
