Excalibur Women's Volleyball Opens 2012 With a W

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The Trent Excalibur varsity women’s volleyball team was able to overcome a rocky start as they downed the Fleming College Knights 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21) at the Trent Community Sport and Recreation Centre on Wednesday.  The win is the first of 2012 for the Excalibur, and is the second time Trent has knocked off their crosstown-rival in the 2011-12 season.

Trent came out of the gates slowly as the visiting Knights took the first set. Once the Excalibur were able to shake away the rust from the holiday break, they took the next three sets in commanding fashion.

Balanced scoring was the name of the game for Trent.  The Excalibur had four players with at least seven kills in the match, lead by Rebecca Staalduinen’s nine. Sara Rettie (Newmarket, Ont.) and Sarah McLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) had eight kills each while Gillian Ferguson-Martin (Winnipeg, Man.) had seven.

McLaren added four blocks and one ace for a 13 point night to lead all scorers.  Van Staalduinen (Peterborough, Ont.) added two blocks to her nine kills, while Rettie added two aces and one block to finish with 11 points each.

Claire Ball (Orillia, Ont.) had 12 kills to lead the Knights.  Rachel Loch (Lakeshore, Ont.) added nine kills and two blocks for Fleming in the losing effort.

With the win, Trent improves to 9-2 in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association East Divison, which is good enough for second place. The next action for the Excalibur will be January 18 when they host the Durham Lords for a 6pm start.

Men's Volleyball Falls to Fleming

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The Trent Excalibur varsity men's volleyball team opened the second half of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) season with a straight sets loss (26-24, 25-19. 25-19) to the Fleming Knights.  The loss comes less than a week after the Excalibur defeated the Knights 3-2 at the Fleming Invitational Tournament.

The first set was tight all the way through, with the visiting Knights eventually prevailing.  In the second and third sets, service and ball handling errors proved costly for the Excalibur, as they allowed the Knights to pull away and earn the match victory.

Trent's Chris Jacklin (Dryden, Ont.) lead all scorers ith 14 points on ten kills and four aces. Brad Keizerwaard (Holland Landing, Ont.) chipped in six kills for the Excalibur, while Nolan Byrne (Bala, Ont.) and Nelson Hannah (Parham, Ont.) added four points each in the loss.

Former Trent player Alex Gastle (Lakefield, Ont.) paced the Fleming attack as he counted 11 kills, one block and once ace. Tyler Levere (Whitby, Ont.) added eight kills and two aces for the Knights.

The loss drops the Excalibur to 1-10 on the season and they sit in the bottom of the OCAA East Division.  They will return to action on January 18 when they host the Durham Lords for an 8pm contest.

Men's Volleyball Opens Fleming Tournament with a Win

Friday, January 6th, 2012

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Trent varsity men’s volleyball team opened 2012 with a win as they knocked of the Fleming Knights in the opening game of the Fleming Men’s Volleyball Invitational on Friday afternoon.  The Excalibur earned a 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 25-16, 13-25, 15-6) win in a back and forth contest against their cross-town rivals.

Fleming opened up the match strong as they took the first set by a commanding 25-16 score.  The second set was much closer as neither team was able to pull away.  The Excalibur were trailing late, but managed to even the score at 22.  From there the teams traded points until Trent was able to string together consecutive points and take the set 26-24.

The third set started close. However, with the Excalibur up 8-7, they went on an 8-point run thanks to quality serving by veteran middle Brad Keizerwaard (Holland Landing, Ont.).  In the run, Keizerwaard had two aces.  Trent cruised to a 25-16 third set win.

And early loss of focus cost Trent the fourth set.  Fleming opened up a 7-1 lead and the Excalibur were never able to recover, dropping the set 25-13.

The Excalibur were able to bounce back to take the fifth set.  Trent ran out to an early 8-1 en route to a 15-6 win.

Jurgen Gorenca (Tirana, Albania) paced the Excalibur with 11 points.  Keizerwaard’s two aces helped him to eight points in the match, while Nolan Byrne (Bala, Ont.) added seven points in the win.

The Excalibur are in action next on Friday evening at 7pm when they take on the Sheridan Bruins as part of the Fleming Invitational. The tournament continues Saturday as Trent wraps up pool play against St. Clair College at 11am. The regular season resumes on January 11 when Trent hosts the Fleming Knights at 8pm.
