PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Trent
varsity men’s volleyball team opened 2012 with a win as they knocked of the
Fleming Knights in the opening game of the Fleming Men’s Volleyball
Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The
Excalibur earned a 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 25-16, 13-25, 15-6) win in a back and
forth contest against their cross-town rivals.
Fleming opened up the match strong as they took the first
set by a commanding 25-16 score. The
second set was much closer as neither team was able to pull away. The Excalibur were trailing late, but managed
to even the score at 22. From there the
teams traded points until Trent
was able to string together consecutive points and take the set 26-24.
The third set started close. However, with the Excalibur up
8-7, they went on an 8-point run thanks to quality serving by veteran middle
Brad Keizerwaard (Holland Landing, Ont.).
In the run, Keizerwaard had two aces.
Trent
cruised to a 25-16 third set win.
And early loss of focus cost Trent the fourth set. Fleming opened up a 7-1 lead and the Excalibur
were never able to recover, dropping the set 25-13.
The Excalibur were able to bounce back to take the fifth
set. Trent ran out to an early 8-1 en route to a
15-6 win.
Jurgen Gorenca (Tirana,
Albania) paced
the Excalibur with 11 points. Keizerwaard’s
two aces helped him to eight points in the match, while Nolan Byrne (Bala,
Ont.) added seven points in the win.
The Excalibur are in action next on Friday evening at 7pm when
they take on the Sheridan Bruins as part of the Fleming Invitational. The
tournament continues Saturday as Trent
wraps up pool play against St. Clair College at 11am. The regular season
resumes on January 11 when Trent
hosts the Fleming Knights at 8pm.
