Trent Wins Bid to Host the 2012 National Lacrosse Championships

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) announced on the weekend that Trent University successfully won the bid to host the 2012 Baggataway Cup in November, marking the first time the championships will be held in Peterborough.

The successful bid builds article_image_on Trent’s reputation as a dynamic host of national and international competition. In 2007, the University hosted the Women’s Under-19 World Lacrosse Championship and was the back-to-back host of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Women’s Rugby Championships in 2010 and 2011.

“We are thrilled to be hosting yet another high-calibre national championship here at Trent. With our state-of-the-art athletics facilities and strong volunteer team, we are primed to host this event,” said director of Athletics, Bill Byrick, adding, “Peterborough is a huge lacrosse community and, as seen by the success of the world championships here in 2007, this city will really embrace the Baggataway Cup and help to make it a great success.”

“Trent’s bid for CUFLA’s championship was fantastic,” said Ryan McGrath, CUFLA commissioner. “We were ecstatic to see support from local politicians and the University President. Peterborough has a culture rich in lacrosse heritage and the proven ability to host lacrosse championships. Not only that, but the exceptional athletic facilities and a state-of-the-art turf field stadium helped swing our vote in favour of Trent to host the 28th Baggataway Cup championship. I look forward watching the best field lacrosse league in the country compete this fall in the lacrosse capital of Canada.”

The Baggataway Cup will be held from November 2 to 4, 2012 at Trent University and will feature the best university lacrosse athletes from the top three teams in the two CUFLA divisions as they compete for the title. As host, Trent will earn an automatic berth in the championship. Previously, Trent has made two appearances in the Baggataway Cup since the team’s inception into the CUFLA league in 2007.

Looking ahead to the championship, Mike Temple, who coaches the men’s varsity lacrosse team alongside Geoff McKinley and Josh Wasson, said, “We have set our sights on fielding a team that will be able to compete with the perennial powerhouses and vie for the national championship title. We have a talented group of returning players including the 2011 midfielder of the year, and added what appears to be a solid recruiting class. With this strategy we believe that we'll be able to field a team that will be a strong contender throughout the 2012 season.”

About CUFLA

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association is the governing body for intercollegiate lacrosse in Canada. The league was established in 1985 as the Ontario University Field Lacrosse Association and has expanded to include 12 university teams across Ontario and Quebec.
