Five Medals for Trent at the 2007 OUA Rowing Championships

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Trent University crews continued their tradition of competing successfully against the largest universities in the province at the 2007 OUA Rowing Championships hosted by Brock University. Rough water and windy conditions on the Royal Henley Course in St. Catharines did not deter Trent rowers from picking up one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the finals.

The Trent women's four of Erin Monette, Jessica Zintel, Joanna Kipp, Ashley Homes and coxswain Rebecca Dunber won gold defeating Brock, Ottawa, Western, Queen’s and McMaster. Teaming up with Erika Spekkens, Paula Simpson, Helen Davis Herdman and Jen Tuters, the women’s eight was defeated by Western in the finals. Rachel Herron won bronze in the women’s lightweight single, Edward Rushton won bronze in the men’s single and Jayda Akatsuka and Grace Cullen won bronze in the lightweight women’s double.

For the OUA banner for total points the Trent women's team came third with 66 points out of the 12 teams competing for the championship. Western was second with 88 and Queen’s won with 115 points. The Trent men's team placed fifth in total points behind Western, Queen’s, Brock, and Toronto. Rowing has the largest participation of all varsity sports contested in the Ontario University Athletic Association.

Next week Trent will send their best to race at the Canadian University Championships to be held in Welland, Ontario.
