TRENT VARSITY MEN'S CREW WRAPS UP AN OUTSTANDING SEASON

Friday, November 6th, 2009

The Trent Varsity Rowing Team ended their season in Montreal on the Olympic Basin competing at the Canadian University Rowing Championships. Trent crews took two medals, placing fourth overall in an event that attracted 21 schools and 275 rowers. First place finish by the men's pair of Mark Basterfield and Brent Holmes Heron, was followed by a second place finish by Robert Baldwin in the men's single event. The men's lightweight crew of Owen Kane, Andrew Shepherd, Jake Byrne and Cameron Munro kept the momentum going accumulating points for Trent with a 6th place finish in the double and a 7th in the four. Due to unsafe weather conditions on Saturday the time trial over 2000m to determine the finals was postponed until Sunday morning, and was followed by the finals in each event leaving very little recovery for the crews. The Trent women, in a rebuilding year placed 12th in the eight and partners Emily Home and Erin Monette finished 10th in the pair. The final race of the day was the men's eight, and Trent seeded third in the time trial had high expectations. In an exciting race UVIC won convincingly, followed by UBC, UWO, Trent, Queens and Brock. Crew members were Cameron Munro, Scott Robertson, Brock O'Reilly, Robert Baldwin, Richard Love, Jakob Heydon-Thomas, Mark Basterfield, Brent Holmes Heron and coxswain Candace Cook. The Trent men's team ended up forth in the points standing. UVIC-95, UBC-89, Brock-70, Trent-67, Western-66, Queens-63, McGill-55, Carleton-29, UofT-20, Alberta-19, Ottawa- 19, Guelph- 18, McMaster- 15, Ryerson-12, Montreal-9, UFV- 4, Concordia- 2. Undefeated all year in the men's four, with two golds in the eight and four at the Head of the Trent ,followed by a gold at the OUA's, then the CURC's gave Trent an outstanding season.
